1 Star Freezes on Sony Blue-ray player
Really disapointing. This is the third time I bought Baraka movie! first VHS format on 96, than DVD and now Blue-ray format. I was one of the first to receive, I believe, because I have pre-ordered on Amazon. Came with problem, and I have returned, than received another copy. But same problem, in my opinion think this problem was spread out on the very first release, so better to wait a couple more months to get a better release. Don’t buy now.

4 Stars BARAKA Blu-ray Movie
This is one of those movie either you love it or hate it.

I liked it for excellent image quality and pretty decent audio.

In some scenes, it would be better to have subtitles showing

where shot was taken.

I think this movie was shot more than 15 yrs ago?

Maybe they can do Baraka 2 and improve on few things.

5 Stars EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS
I’ve seen this film before on vhs, and as well on dvd, but nothing compares to the awesome quality on this blu ray disc. its like i’ve never seen it before all over again. the detail of the imagery and the clarity of the sound blows away any of the previous releases. i caught myself noticing things i’ve never seen before with this blu ray release, even though i have seen this film about 10 times. it is a must have for any collection, and can be appreciated by all !

2 Stars a hodge-podge of striking images without a theme
Well, no, maybe there was a theme: we stink.

We are wasteful (hundreds of military aircraft sitting in the Arizona desert), brutal (Cambodia’s killing fields, Auschwitz), ephemeral (Egyptian ruins), vain (Amazon and African tribes in the most colorful dress), exploitive (numbing assembly lines, cigarette factories, prostitution), and cruel (chicken factories, public cremations, scavenging in trash heaps).

We’re also religious (countless scenes). Was that the director’s message? That for all our faith and devotion, we’re despicable?

And that nature is magnificent? Waterfalls, volcanoes, springbok enjoying the first rains, pensive monkeys soaking in hot springs?

I love the beauty of nature, too, but densely crowded cities also bring us schools and colleges, symphony orchestras, and hospitals. Not too many of those in the Amazon jungle or African plains, huh.

The photographer’s skill and effort is obvious. I wish he’d had a director with a vision of what to photograph.

Finally, the resemblance to Koyaanisqatsi is not in this film’s favor.

5 Stars Around The World On 1 Disc!
Breathtaking is one word I use when telling people about this movie. I put this in my Blu Ray player and from the very first menu image I was blown away!

Being able to see these cultures and they way they live is something you wont forget. Most of us get up in the morning, have coffee, read the paper, etc…well scrap all that and head to the most remote areas on earth, where ritual dances and ceremonial cremations are still performed!

I was a huge fan of Planet Earth, but this movie with no Narration is top notch! The BD is a real treat with stunning visuals, and incredible sound (watch the special features, the sound guy did some pretty amazing stuff!) If you want to see how things are outside your own backyard you owe it to yourself to purchase this movie.

Also on a side note, they did away with the cardboard sleeve and gave us an actual blue BD case! ENJOY!

5 Stars Beautiful! A masterpiece. A visual smorgasboard. Watch it!!!
Kudos to those responsible for this film/video, for not having dialogue, or a storyline - just fascinating sights from around the world, which richly includes cultural and religious customs - social evolution displayed in all it’s splendour. I especially loved the scene of the mosque or temple (not sure which) that reflected shimmering, scintillating white light from wall and ceiling - a visionary view of the conscious state of bliss? I loved it, bought it, and show it to friends.

I’m sure you’ll love it too.

5 Stars Mesmerizing
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this film is truly priceless. It is nothing less than a spiritual journey that explores the human condition and man’s place in the universe in a way I have never before seen. You won’t regret watching it, and I doubt you’ll be able to view it only once.

5 Stars Simply incredible.
This is just a simply incredible documentary that I have watched repeatedly. No voices…or words I mean(there are plenty of voices). But the seamless transistion between the nature scenes, to the assembly lines, to the cities in time-lapse are brilliant. The music seems to blend instruments from everywhere into one orchestra. Questioning your Faith? This video documents people of all faiths…for centuries…and will make you question your own existence. Simply amazing.

5 Stars A truly eye-opener
I’ve came across Baraka when i did some research about one of my favorite artists. Just the brief description already caught my attention. Once i’ve found a small clip of the actual video i was sold. And the whole product does not disappoint me of what 10 mins of the “trailer” showed me. This is defenitly a truly complete work of art, beauty and naturality. Even if you have Kids. Make them watch it, I suggest though that they be at least 12 due to some content. It will show the true beauty of nature and the full extend of ruthlessness of humanity. But it will open their eyes and yours, just as it did mine. About the quality i have only one line to give. I’m still drooling over the epic presentation.

5 Stars Baraka DVD Review
This film is breathtaking. It takes you places you might not be able to go. With no narration and original fusion music, it’s an all encapturing film. The 70 mm lens captures images in a way that puts you right there. I recommend this film to anyone who loves filmography, travel, art and originality. A highly recommended documentary- you won’t regret it.

Koyaanisqatsi Life Out of Balance

Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 09/21/2004 Run time: 87 minutes

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A Unique Experience

I’ve had the VCR tape of this movie for many years and finally had to toss it and replace it with the DVD. Koyaanisqatsi is a unique and mystical journey for mythological man. It bogs down in a couple of places, but what DVD does not? The story is exciting and depressing, thrilling and melancholy, inspiring and introspective.

5 Stars Stands the test of time, when’s the Blu-ray coming?
Having seen this film in a movie theater with a live performance of the score by Philip Glass and his musicians right there on stage… I can say this DVD doesn’t capture the experience, what with it’s not so glamorous picture quality. But until the inevitable Blu-ray comes on the market, this is the best we’ve got and it’s fairly good. The colors are vivid and there aren’t too many defects. The picture does need some clean-up work. The source would greatly benefit from a high-def remaster.

Koyaanisqatsi is quite an original film, having influenced everything from television ads, music videos, nature documentaries and even feature length Hollywood movies. The film is all about pulse and movement conveyed by the time lapse editing style it made famous.

It’s style and essence has been ripped off so many times during the nearly three decades since it came out, that it’s easy to take Koyaanisqatsi for granted. But going back to the original is always thrilling and I don’t think there has ever been a better film of it’s type.

The film and it’s director, Godfrey Reggio, have been criticized for being preachy. I think these criticisms are partially valid for this film but far more valid for the subsequent installments of the trilogy. Reggio and Glass give an insightful interview which can be found on the special features that goes into Reggio’s background and how they collaborated on this film.

Koyaanisqatsi starts off slow and some of the nature photography tends to drag, but things take off as humanity comes on the scene and the final portions of the film reach a fever pitch that neither Reggio, nor his later imitators ever captured again. The score by Philip Glass is a classic of sorts in modern film scoring. Glass’ minimalism can become quite grating on it’s own but with the constant visual onslaught, it meshes rather well. Glass would become a big name in film scoring afterwards and he’s been repeating the same style for decades.

This is another example of a classic film that would be a showcase in high-def. So a message to whoever currently owns the rights, get moving and bring Koyaanisqatsi to Blu-ray! And do a proper job of it too!

1 Star Disturbing
This is one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. It is a cold, hostile look at our planet through the eyes of someone who clearly hates people and the effect we have had on Earth. All of the images are “big-picture” so that even at the beginning, where the scenes are all nature in its vast, bleak, raw glory, there is not a hint of life. At first I wondered if I was watching footage of an exploration of Mars, but as the film progressed, I began to recognize many of our National Parks, shot in the most unflattering light. I have been to some of the places in this film, but what I experienced there made me love nature even more. This film, on the other hand, gave me the opposite feeling of David Attenborough’s work. If I were an alien visiting this planet and I experienced it the way this film does, I would want to blow it up along with all of the hostile nature forms and colonies of busy ant-like people on it. Films like this encourage anti-social and environmental activists and discourage nature lovers. Do yourself a favor and skip this one in favor of Planet Earth or another film which focuses on the beauty of our planet and leaves you feeling like there’s something here worth saving.

5 Stars Powerful!
This is a movie that cries out for a big-screen television and a good sound system to enjoy it to the fullest. The mighty soundtrack of this film is probably the most important element that enables it to penetrate to such a visceral level. As the film begins with stunning views of the desert southwest, we see only the minimal impact of the Pre-Columbian people, represented by their rock paintings. The music is deep, profound, sacral, with chanting of Hopi songs. With the time-lapse photography, the rhythms of nature become more evident. As cloud formations billow majestically into the heavens, corresponding pure trumpet-like tones flood our hearing. After a few minutes of looking at a pristine wilderness, we begin to see the evidence of modern man, the music morphs accordingly, and we are propelled headlong into an amazing journey into modern civilization, circa 1983. With the speeded-up footage commuters and shoppers are seen hurling themselves through city streets and shopping malls at breakneck speed. As always, the music paces the action and focuses our attention right along. Where the accelerated footage of nature had revealed natural cycles and patterns, the fast view of modern civilization reveals a mechanistic, artificial world where the inhabitants are driven like racing robots obeying some arbitrary implacable computer program. Some scenes use slow-motion to deliver their message, such as poignant little glimpses of people on city streets looking lost and alienated, or just numbly mindless. One particularly devastating sequence is the sight of deserted high-rises in city slums. Here the music reaches a throbbing, pounding, relentlessness that truly seems demonically inspired. As these buildings began to succumb to the charges of demolition and sink to the ground, raising clouds of dust and debris, I was reminded of a phrase from the Old Testament: “the abomination of desolation”. Even the scenes of industry and recreation which represent “progress” are infused with a delirium which recalls the image of lemmings racing toward a cliff. There is a strange sense of exhilaration even while there is a sense that this madcap life-style is leading to a breakdown. This film is documentary proof that over 25 years ago someone had correctly anticipated many of the problems of sustainability we are starting to face today. The frenetic pace of consumption shown in this film had to lead to a day of reckoning, economically and environmentally. The message ,I think, is not that progress is always bad, but that the way we are going about it is out of balance. Aside from that, for a film with no dialog or main characters, it is astonishingly entertaining. So crank up the sound, position yourself in front of your(hopefully big-screen) tv and get ready for one heck of a trip!

5 Stars Glad I didn’t see this when I was younger, it would have changed my life
Released in the early 80s, but watched just last night. Those who have seen K probably agree it is even more relevant today (and will be another 25 years from now, assuming we haven’t blown ourselves back to the stone age). I got the movie from Netflix only because Philip Glass, one of my Deserted Island musicians, wrote its music. I wondered at the odd title, and wondered what the movie would be about. Trying not to spoil your own experience, let me say only that the movie can be enjoyed equally no matter what language you speak, that it should not be watched while tired (the beginning is relaxing to the point of curing insomnia), and that it demands a widescreen HDTV with the audio coming out of your sound system.

Something New Widescreen Edition

Something New Widescreen Edition

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)–only to discover that he’s white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya’s friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian’s own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease–but along the way, Kriss Turner’s script, Sanaa Hamri’s direction, and Baker’s and especially Lathan’s performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya’s and Brian’s emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast–including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)–doesn’t hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. –Bret Fetzer

5 Stars Sanaa is FANTASTIC in this movie!!
This movie is my favorite of all of Sanaa’s movies. Her acting is flawless. She lives & breathes this part, you can see every single emotion on her face and her part is played flawlessly, even down to the tiniest human reaction. If you are a (female) fan (it’s more of a chick-flick) of Sanaa, you will absolutely LOVE this movie. Doesn’t matter if you’re black, white or blue, this story pulls you in until the end and you never tire of watching it. (I wish they would have made a sequel).

3 Stars IS IT REALLY SOMETHING NEW
I remember getting psyched about this movie, a feel good comedy and a sophisticated interracial romance ? too good to be true, and i was very much hoping it would move past the typical stereotypes, and in some ways it did.

Generally i like Sanaa Lathan , and i was hoping this movie would move past the “overworked, undersexed, professional stuck up” black woman stereotype, (the other one is the “loud mouth , oversexed, ghetto hood rat”.

well on that note it delivered, kenya is not loveable to say the least, not at first anyway, now she is a seasoned professional, an accountant at a big firm, her life is her work, she has a beautiful home and she is holding her own, so why would she be so rude to Brian on the blind date, based on him being white? i mean even if i was adverse to dating white guys , i would not be rude like that. as usual… the black female does not get to be “fun” or even “tolerant”.

her friends are no better, at a valentines day girl get together they lament over the statistics, 42% of black women will never marry, or something to this effect, that being said, they are ALL professionals, a judge, a pediatrician, an accountant, etc. so why in god’s name are they so ignorant about her dating Brian.

“he is a white boy” ” did you really think it was gonna lead to anything”, it was really disheartening to me, it paints black women as being shallow and ignorant on that front.

i would not expect professionals to say things like this. Brian is constantly put to the test by Kenya’s friends being called ” anight light” and ” she is getting her swirl on” to ” he is a spy sent her to steal my recipe” haha, funny right, not to me. they also don’t explore any apprehension from brian’s side of the camp, it’s only kenya’s pretentious family we get to see in action.

so did i like the movie yes, i felt brian and kenya had great chemistry after she finally let her guard down, i d idnt like how she had to be this hard stuck up bourgeouise type of woman thru the first 2/4s of the movie, i think his acting was great, i like how in the end her family and friends accepted him and she let herself be loved.

3 Stars 2.5 stars out of 4
The Bottom Line:

Something New is well-meaning enough and features some fine acting and sweet moments, but at its core it’s an utterly formulaic romance about two people who meet cute, fall in love, are pulled apart by circumstances, and then…well you know the rest.

5 Stars Simon Baker is fabulous!
This movie is a very entertaining, sweet romance. All fans of Simon Baker should see this movie. His character is charming!

5 Stars Awesome movie!
This movie is beautiful, the acting, writing, visuals all of it just works! Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker are gorgeous onscreen together and the story is a real one African-American women can relate to. I liked it because although it was about a white man and black woman falling in love with each other, it didn’t bash black men or black relationships. It just made the point that you should open your heart to new and unfamiliar experiences because it might bring you your highest happiness and that you shouldn’t give into pressure from your family, friends and society if it means giving up what you really want. One of my favorite movies and recommended for all.

Baraka

April 27, 2009 by Lawn Care · Leave a Comment

Baraka

The word Baraka means “blessing” in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating–not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place–and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: “It’s not where you are that’s important, it’s what’s there.” And what’s here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. –Larisa Lomacky Moore

Lake Consequence

Lake Consequence

Studio: Anthem Pictures Release Date: 08/28/2007

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars I believe in consequences!
This is Joan Severance’s best-known role, and there is good reason why. My goodness, she is absolutely captivating! If ever there was a role where an actress could set the film on-fire, this is it. She has a mysterious, demure beauty that so intoxicates me. Wow!

Joan portrays a bored housewife who is having a sort of mid-life crisis. Her husband is a decent man, treats her well and she lives an upscale lifestyle. However, she finds herself “missing” something in her life. She starts to gravitate towards a penniless, buffed-up tree-trimmer (Billy Zane). Eventually, she must choose between the fantasy & reality.

To add to the dynamic, she suffered a traumatic sexual encounter as a teen that has left her scarred, confused and a bit twisted in the sexual sphere. During the film, she discovers that there is more to her erotic dimension than she once thought.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the plot is that the love-triangle differs from most. In the majority of the movies of this type, the 3rd party (in this case, Zane’s character) is trying to steal the woman away from her husband. In this case, Zane’s beneficent persona knows full-well that her husband will offer a much better life than what he is capable of. And, he has a remorse for possibly interfering with her relationship w/her son.

All in all, if (like me!) you’re a fan of erotic movies which do not shy away from a surplus of nudity, then you can’t do much better than this film! There is an obvious symbolic gesture in the name of the lake where she pursues her fantasy; in life, we will never be bereft of consequences for our actions.

1 Star Lake Swill
One of the worst movies ever made. Don’t waste your time. The acting was horrible, the story was nonsensical, the actions of the characters were completely unbelievable, and in the end there was nothing morally of socially redeeming about this movie.

4 Stars Joan Sizzles
This movie gets high marks for Joan Severance’s incredibly hot performance. Although the plot is a little weak with some implausible elements, overall this is an enjoyable movie. If you like Joan (how can you not?) you will love “Lake Consequence”. An erotic and sensual look into a woman’s mind.

3 Stars Lake Consequence
Lake Consequence is a classic Zalman King production-beautiful bodies, offbeat scenery, jazzy score, and little if any “plot” to speak of. If you enjoy this kind of film-and I do-then Lake Consequence is for you.

2 Stars It didn’t completely suck.
Well, Joan Severance is pretty hot, but Billy Zane couldn’t act his way out of wet paper bag, and the script is …slightly less than A List. But it does produce wood, which is probably part of the point, nyet? The other woman is also hot and somehow believable in her own shallowly defined role. It could been improved 2000 percent by the application of a writer and a Johnny Depp. give it fifty milligrams of Viagara.

Timeless A National Parks Odyssey IMAX

Studio: Razor Digital Ent Release Date: 08/15/2006

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Beautiful but frustrating
The images on this DVD are as beautiful as advertised but other than knowing they are of National Parks going in as you watch you have no idea wich ones you are looking at. I watched this with two other people we all felt a small indication of what parks you are seeing would have made this much more enjoyable

5 Stars David Fortney Improves with time
I have other David Forney DVDs (i.e Earth Scapes), but they don’t compare with the image reproduction quality of this DVD (70mm IMAX original, no doubt has a lot to do with the mastering quality). I have been a Patrick O’Hearn fan since the early 1990s, so this fusion is very good. I teach Digital Photography here in Lake Tahoe and the techniques David uses to capture his time laps images is just captivating to my eye. When I am stressed, I will reach for this DVD to help refocus my mind (sound quality also is very good). I hope David advances to Blu-Ray to keep improving image quality and that he continues to use New Age musicians to set the mood.

5 Stars BUY THE OTHER IMAX DVD
There is a better version of this same IMAX presentation entitled North America’s National Parks. It is the SAME movie only it is in widescreen format and may have other enhancements. I’ll give this version a 5-star too - but it’s really the other movie you want. Again, same picture, but released in 2008 with better options. As for the movie itself, it’s very good. Visually stunning. The time-lapsed scenes are amazing. It really is a visual treat and will show off the picture quality of your home theater system. The commentary is very good and formative, but I wish we could have heard more sounds of nature. Basically, it’s some guy talking over a soundtrack of soothing music - piano, guiter, etc.. It’s all very nice and mellow, but I wish I could have heard some of the sounds to go along with the amazing images. For example, a huge waterfall cascades down, and it would be nice to hear water crashing to the ground. Instead, all you hear is music. What about the “music” of nature? But it is an IMAX film from 2002, so consider that audiences would probably have been upset if there was no commentary… just nature sounds. Add this to your collection and PLEASE support The Nature Conservatory and The National Arbor Day Foundation.

5 Stars Excellent
Truly relaxing nature scenes with great cinematography. Most programs trying this do not come close. Highly recommended. A great follow up to

the genre started by Natural States and True North, but done with up to date filming techniques.

3 Stars Too fast-paced for relaxation
I agree with other reviewers that the images and music are gorgeous. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. Yet I want other buyers to realize what I didn’t: many of the scenes are filmed with time-lapse photography. In other words, the clouds and shadows move across the landscape in accelerated motion. Some viewers will like this pace and won’t mind that the naturally inspiring landscape has been altered. But for me, this created a sense of hurry and hectic rushing through time instead of the simplicity and calm of a real-time cinescape. Some of the chapters are presented at normal speed. These are the ones I find most enjoyable, and I only wish the talents who created this had let the natural beauty and their skills stand alone. Many will enjoy this film as it is. I had expected a simpler version of nature.

The Best of Ground Force Garden Rescues

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 04/04/2006 Run time: 30 minutes Rating: Nr

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars A little disappointed
I love Ground Force… but I really want to buy the series… This DVD is just a collection of the cast fooling around with bits here and there of them doing several different lawns. It’s better than nothing…. but doesn’t really give a good overall view of what this show is all about.

2 Stars NOT WHAT I WANTED
I loved Ground Force when it came on BBC America, so I wanted some episodes, but this is just the highlights-no gardening going on!!!

Not what I wanted.

5 Stars Amazing …
I am from India and can watch this DVD again and again .. it leaves you wanting more. Alan, Charlie and Tommy are amazing. I definitely need some one like them!! I hope more DVDs are released by season or by terrain.

4 Stars Only Four Stars Because…
…a “Best Of” DVD is not enough!!! The Ground Force team is amazing — and especially so during the Titchmarsh years. I would love to sit and watch these episodes over and over again. Alan, Charlie, and Tommy are not only garden makeover geniuses, but they’ve winkled their way into the hearts of BBC America fans. Please, please, please release Ground Force in season by season compilations!

4 Stars Leaves You Hungering For More
The BBC television series Ground Force is a whole lot more than a gardening show. Like Trading Spaces, the team has 48 hours to complete their transformation, usually turning a weedy back garden into a thing of beauty in the space of 48 hours. In between this miraculous accomplishment, there is much banter, the occasional argument, and even a rare, full-blown snit. The team is marvelous, the projects imaginative, and the results always spectacular. It’s a wonderful show, much more interesting than the subject implies. Great views of Britain abound as well. However, this DVD just whets the appetite for more. DVD releases by season would be much appreciated!
